Flush Niacin: How Does It Work?
Niacin is the most common method of reducing cholesterol in the blood. It comes in a variety of types that may cause niacin flush. The major component of niacin is nicotinic acid and the different variations are the ones that cause the different types and effects of niacin.
As the name suggests this variety of nicotinic acid is released promptly as soon as it lands in the body. It is the most common cause of flush niacin effects due to the sudden release into the blood stream. The medication bottle may not state that it is the immediate release variety but it should be assumed that it is. It should not be consumed by children since they may be unable to cope with the adverse effects. This sudden change may cause increased heart rates that may cause the rapture of fragile internal blood vessels and result in internal bleeding which could be quite severe. The doctor’s instructions should always be adhered to.
Flush niacin is designed to release the nicotinic acid into the blood over a period of time and hence also called time release nicotinic acid. It is relatively safe and can be purchased over the counter. It however increases the chances of liver toxicity which is rarely seen in the immediate release version. This could also spread to other organs such as the kidney. Sustained dilation of blood vessels is also not ideal for people suffering from anemia or asthma since it could cause insufficient oxygenation of the blood and thus cause dizziness and fainting.
It does not release the nicotinic acid immediately like the immediate release version neither does it release the nicotinic acid bit by bit over a long period of time like the sustained release type. It moderates and lies somewhere in the middle. The side effects of niacin flush may be manifested more but not as much s the immediate release kind.
It is a product of nicotinic acid but does not cause flushing. It is inexpensive and does not cause liver toxicity thus making it a popular choice of niacin for cholesterol removal. It is however not as effective as nicotinic acid and should not be taken if there is the choice not to. It still however does the functions of other normal vitamins such as synthesis of hormones that control the sexual characteristics of people and stress related hormones that really affect the adrenal glands and involuntary actions.
It is flush free but often more expensive than nicotinic acid. Its ability to lower the cholesterol however has not been ascertained.
If you go for flush Niacin, you are advised to always go by what the manufacturer says in terms of usage and more importantly, consult your doctor about the use of this medication. Those of you in special conditions such as pregnant women should steer clear of these drugs since hormonal imbalance could have adverse effects on your unborn child and your health in general.
